Capturing Moments!

In this 2 hour videoconference workshop, we will address the varied ways in which you can potentially repurpose existing resources to a multi-media format which can capture images, text and video and compile it into a neat presentable package file for quick viewing to share across a myriad of platforms. We will start with the simple to the moderately easy tools available, then move on to the more complex ones; even looking at ways in which we can convert videos to other formats to play in different platforms and displays on mobile devices.

Lastly we will look how we can create videos on the fly using iPhone, iPads and deploy them to a range of devices and link them to the 'Cloud'. We will look at 'Cloud Computing' in another session but start to consider cloud repositories rather than saving to computer drives for ease of mobile access and updating content anywhere anytime.

Starting Off

Ideally, you need to create three folder types: 1.Videos, 2.Audios, 3.Images.

Demonstrate Process: Capture (video, photo, audio) Post to web for access, Convert file, Upload LEO and Play.

By aggregating files from different media types (audio, images, videos) you can develop or repurpose new dynamic media resources very quickly on the 'fly' using a range of free authoring tools like PhotoStory, Moviemaker, Audacity and non freeware such as Adobe Presenter, Adobe Captivate and Adobe Connect Pro. These products can also be deployed in a myriad of ways across a range of platforms eg LEO, Adobe Connect Pro, Wikis or Blogs.

Converting Files to Suit Platforms:

Many platforms though do have specific file formats. Many video capturing devices produce varied files formats and some may need converting. This can be easily done by a freeware called Any Video Converter which in seconds can convert files captured in any format type to a recommended file format for LEO, Adobe Connect Pro and other platforms.

iPads need a different browser to play <Swf or flash> files and this is enabled by Puffin Browser rather than Safari

Access Puffin ($1.99) on Apple Store

Puffin Browser
Puffin Browser

Types of Output files:

Conversion Software:
Any Video Converter - is a great application to download and its free!

Types of Video Formats:

Mobile devices- MOV
PhotoStory WAV, WMV
Moviemaker- WMV
Adobe Presenter - SWF/FLV

Best overall conversion is the file format called- AVI (Use Any Video Converter)

Audio Formats

Mp4peg
Mp3peg

You can use Audacity (Free audio authoring tool) or Any Video Converter ( converts audio not just video)

Image Formats:

Jpeg (recommended for images)
Gif (recommended for drawings)
Png

Video formats supported by Prism.
Prism converts avi, mpg, vob, asf, wmv, mp4
and all video formats that have a DirectShow based codec. If you can play the video file using Windows Media Player, you can convert it using Prism.
MPEG AVI MP4 MOV WMV video file format converter
MPEG AVI MP4 MOV WMV video file format converter

You can use microsoft office using Save As or <Paint> found in <Accessories under <Programs>

User friendly access Player types:

LEO can accept most files the problem lies in the access of these files from the user device whether its an ipad or PC or Mac. Often files play in various platforms better than others and depending on the computer or device often these default to software like Quicktime, Media Player Series, iTunes, Realtime etc. The ideal set up is to have a university streaming server that caters for these variables and downtime bandwidth issues that is not compromised by the user. This would be very conducive to a plethora of file types regardless of what the user uses to access.

MASHUPS:

The main characteristics of a mashup are combination, visualization, and aggregation. It is important to make existing data more useful, for personal and professional use.
Mashups can be considered to have an active role in the evolution of social software and Web 2.0. Mashup composition tools are usually simple enough to be used by end-users. They generally do not require programming skills. In technology, a mashup enabler is a tool for transforming incompatible IT resources into a form that allows them to be easily combined, in order to create a mashup. Mashup enablers allow powerful techniques and tools (such as mashup platforms) for combining data and services to be applied to new kinds of resources.
There is a myriad of technology tools and software out there ranging from free to various costed software applications for both computers including new Apps to same output using idevices for cloud computing.
We will cover user friendly technology as follows:

  • PhotoStory 3
  • Windows Moviemaker
  • Adobe Presenter 8
  1. Adobe Connect Pro

Simplest Way to Mashup :
Repurposing what you already have in the form of powerpoints, images and or videos or starting to create from scratch is easy.

Basic Requirements:

In order to capture video /audio files on your Mac or PC is easy but you will need the following technologies to develop your content for any video recorder software.

Webcam Recording Software
Webcam Recording Software
Video Recording Software
Video Recording Software
Video Screen Capture

Record from
webcam/ Headset
Record from
eg iPad external devices
Record using your
computer or Mobile device

i) Microsoft Windows PhotoStory 3 (Garage band for Mac)

Choose simple free software eg Windows PhotoStory 3 is a great way to begin your first capture of images, talk over's and reproducing resources to another level. This great little software 'can do' all your images, text and audio and then beautifully package it as a small nifty video to be viewed on any platform.

This could be the start of storyboarding what you already have to engage your students to have now a three dimensional aspect to a once 2 dimensional resource. Learn how to create digital Storytelling through PhotoStory as a beginning to the world of multimedia resource development.

You will need to have downloaded the latest Windows Media Player 12 (Free download)

Demonstration PhotoStory ppt

(A demonstration will now be done and recorded for viewers)
One of the ways one can think of repurposing one's own resources is how you could manipulate and change the file format to embed into another file. This can be done in PhotoStory.
Question1: What is PhotoStory?
Once you understand what it is you can CONVERT slides to WHAT?
Then you can manipulate them all to a movie. How simply by selecting in powerpoint and converting its original format.
Simply < Save As> Jpegs
Then in PhotoStory select the <Insert> button and import them ALL!
Another trick is to save a Blank image in <Paint> and now you can add any text with no background eg Pose a question maybe?
The entire PhotoStory becomes a WMV file (One form of a Video format) that can be converted through Any Video Converter software to suit certain platforms. Read later in this session section on Conversion Software.
The WMV file can now if wanting to go to the NEXT level? deployed to Windows Moviemaker. Insert all ( entire file) as a video because now thats what it is... it it no longer just a ppt file you powerpoint. It has now become a wmv video with voice, image and file format text added in a one single package.
ii) Windows MovieMaker
This is another free software available included in Microsoft office suite 6,7,8 Vista and XP. Using Windows Moviemaker you can actually add live camera video capture using your Webcam (either in built or attached USB).

iii) Adobe Presenter 8

Adobe Presenter 8 software helps you communicate more effectively with engaging videos and interactive presentations created in Microsoft PowerPoint. Minimize the time, effort, and cost of producing and editing videos by doing it yourself at your desktop. Add quizzes; deliver to the web, video sharing sites, desktops, and mobile devices; and track using integration with Learning Management Systems (LMSs).

New Feature #1: One-Click Integration with Adobe Captivate 6

As Figure 1 shows, Presenter now has three different Record options. The first lets you record audio, synchronizing it to your slides and animations. The second taps into your Webcam to record video of yourself (or anything or anyone else you like), and the third lets you tap into Adobe Captivate’s screen-recording abilities. This last option is available only if you have Adobe Captivate installed.
external image image001.png
Figure 1: The three recording options
Choosing the Record Application Simulation option gives you access to Captivate’s recording dialog (without the rest of the Captivate interface). There you have all the options normally available, including the ability to simultaneously record different types of simulations: demonstrations, in which you are showing learners how something works; training, in which you let learners practice without penalty, providing hints along the way; and assessments, in which you test the learner’s knowledge, keeping track of the learner’s answers and progress. You also can create a fourth type of simulation: custom, in which you choose what to include.
Once you’ve completed the recording, Presenter will create a slide for each type of simulation you created. Each slide will contain a simulation SWF (published Flash) file. For instance, if you choose to record both a demo and an assessment, you will see two new PowerPoint slides created in your slide deck. The first will contain the demo SWF file and the second will contain the assessment SWF file.
You also will notice in Figure 1 that there is an Edit option for Application Simulations as well. Once you’ve recorded a simulation, clicking the Edit button will return you to Captivate and then you will be able to access all of Captivate’s features to edit the recording you created.
For those who use Captivate and Presenter together, this is a very useful new feature.

New Feature #2: Video Production

As mentioned above, there is also an option in Presenter 8 to let you record your own videos. The cool thing about this option is that you can be on camera while you move through your slides, simultaneously recording both.
Once you click the Record Video icon (see Figure 1) you’ll be able to set your preferences, as Figure 2 shows. If you have more than one microphone or Webcam, you can choose the one you want to use.
external image image002.png
Figure 2: Video preferences
Once you’ve recorded yourself, you are able to edit the video using the options in Figure 3. You can:
  1. Apply your own branding
  2. Pan and zoom your video and/or your presentation
  3. Trim your video
external image image003.png
Figure 3: Editing options
As Figure 4 shows, you can also choose different layouts for different portions of the video. You can choose to:
  1. Show only the presenter
  2. Show only the presentation
  3. Show both with the presenter on the left
  4. Show both with the presenter on the right
external image image004.png
Figure 4: Layout options
What I really like about the above is that you don’t have to stick to only one layout for the whole video; you can switch out layouts at any time along the way. For example, you can start with just the presenter, and then have the presenter and the presentation share the screen. At any point where you want to show a lot of detail from the presentation, you can switch to making the presentation full screen.
When you’re ready to publish,Presenter offers you the four options shown in Figure 5:
  1. Publish it to your computer
  2. Export it to PowerPoint
  3. Upload it to YouTube
  4. Upload it to Adobe Connect
external image image005.png
Figure 5: Publishing options
Other options in the video editor include automatically adjusting brightness and sharpness, reducing background noise, and more. All in all, this feature is pretty cool for anyone who has wanted an easy way to incorporate video into presentations.

Using Capturing Devices for Feedback to Word Document or making Word Documents come ALIVE!!!
Embedding media into documents online in Word
Inserting Audio, Video into a Microsft Office Word Document
Simply goto <Home> and Select tab <Insert > Select < Object> then select <wave sound> You now have the option to record live anywhere on the document and save it . This will be played when clicked by the reader. You could do all your rubrics this way for assignments to save writing. If you have pre recorded 15 second recordings on your rubric responses as seperate < audio files> eg Fail blurb , Pass, Credit, Distinction- you could then select and embed them accordingly across the document to save writing and return to student either by email or feedback via Mahara ( e-Portfolio)
Bringing Word Documents Alive to the Reader.
You could have a word document uploaded into LEO that could actually talk to the student. You could do a prerecorded video in Moviemaker and embed it as a <Video Clip> using the same procedure in Word under <Insert> and select <Object> upload your WMV file and embed .
In Moviemaker using you Webcam select <Capture> and then just start and end recording. (Demo done)
Using desktop sharing technology and converting a word document to a PDF you could upload it into Adobe Connect start your webcam and start recording and you could actually display someone's work and walk through it in Adobe Connect Pro and send them the recording. (Demo done)
You can record on your iPhone (MOV Demo) this does not have to be converted to avi or wmv a MOV file is fine so you could potentially talk to your iphone using the headset it came with and then email it to your self and save to a folder for your cohort and embed into their assignment online and return to student email. Adobe connect could do track changes and you could talk as you are doing it then send the recording device to student in eportfolio - <Mahara Dropbox > feedback section or email.(Demo done)
How's that for captuiring ideas...?
